How to be a better comrade to Black People:
a guide for non-Black folks (esp. whites)
ONE:
Be realistic & honest with yourself.
Ask yourself what your motivations are.
Did you witness an injustice towards a Black person recently and now you're filled with a desire to help us?
Why now and not previously?
How long can you sustain your anti-racism work on fury alone?
We know you went to "the Protests" in 2020 Kevin, but what have you done about your racist paw-paw?
TWO:
Say Black when you mean Black.
Black issues deserve to be named for what they are.
Saying BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, & People of Color) when you are talking about a specifically Black issue, erases our unique struggles. While we are all oppressed peoples, our tragedies and triumphs are not the same.
And y'all always whisper Black like it's a secret and it's weird.
THREE:
Remember that your role is support, not management.
White folk are conditioned to view us as subordinate to them — and y'all frequently talk over us, by centering your lived experiences and feelings in conversations and spaces for and about Black folks.
Stop that shit.
I know it's weird taking orders from "the help", but I promise we know what we doing, Peggy Ann
FOUR:
Anti-racism work is not charity work.
White supremacy disconnects you from seeing and embracing the humanity in Black folks.
This is not something you should view as charity work.
This is part of your healing process.
Learning from Black people helps bring you back into alignment with humanity as a whole.
You're welcome.
Your crystals and high vibes don't mean shit if you can't even manifest a single care for Black liberation, Celestina High Priestess of Artemis (your name is fucking Kelly)
FIVE:
Stop trying to get invited to the cook-out.
Being anti-racist isn't something you feel proud of being.
It's not a sign that you're seasoned or better than other people.
It's the bare minimum of human fucking decency.
You aren't getting an award or guaranteed Black friends for doing this. That's conditional allyship, otherwise known as being bitch made
Dogs can't even eat raisins, fuck we gone do with this potato salad you brought?
SIX:
Lip service don't pay the bills.
Most of us don't wake up with a hard-on to educate our oppressors.
Your Black friends also get tired of being your "Is this okay to say?" sounding board.
Compensate us for this work rather than just thanking us.
Put your money where your BLM bio is.
